Edited Photos Analysis
This is photo of Joseph Stalin and the chief of the secret police Nikolai Yezhov walking together. But after the mass arrests and executions during the Great Purge Nikolai had been taken by the government to be tortured and killed. So with his name and reputation tarnished he was edited out of this photo in the press release version. This is a clear example of the Soviet's ability to control the public's conception of the government.
This next photo depicts a Russian soldier raising a Soviet flag over the Reichstag declaring victory over the Nazis. This image was edited to remove the wrist watches that the Soviet troops had looted while they sieged Berlin. It also darkened the smoke to better emphasize the defeat the Nazis had suffered. This is a clear example of the government trying to paint their soldiers as the heroes that had saved the world when in reality while they had defeated the Nazi threat they were not all that good themselves.
